The sample consisted of 12 children between the ages of 6 and 12 years who were residing in a shelter for homeless families in a city in South Carolina. Children participating in the study met the following criteria: a) spoke and understood English; b) were willing to participate in the study; c) had a parent or guardian who was willing for the child to participate in the study.
A total of 18 interviews were conducted. Initially there were 4 groups of children with 3 members each. However, as the study progressed the groups changed and three children were interviewed singly. Two child-participants had difficulty with the camera and only 12 pictures were returned from the developer. They were given a second camera, and the operation of the camera was reviewed. Only the photographs from the second attempt were used in subsequent interviews with these children.
